During the summer of 2003, at eBay Live in Orlando Florida eBay Radio was born.

The program was hosted by Jim "Griff" Griffin, the Dean of eBay Education and the first customer service rep eBay ever hired.

Originally it started out as a live broadcast from the eBay Live event for eBayers who were not able to attend.

After eBay Live was over the program became a bi-weekly 1 hour show with 2 guests and open phones for eBayers to ask a question of the host.

Since it's early days the program has expanded to 3 hours on Tuesdays weekly and 2 hours on Thursday also weekly.

The Tuesday program is called eBay Radio and airs from 1 to 3pm CT.  During these 2 hours Griff spends the first half of of each hour interviewing guests who are expects on the subject of eBay or on topics of interest to both eBay buyers and sellers.

The second half of each hour are open phones where any eBay member can call in and ask a question of Griff.  If he does not know the answer he will do his best to find it for you.

Immediately after eBay Radio on Tuesdays is eBay Radio PowerSeller Hour.  This program airs from 3 to 4 pm CT.  During this program Griff talks with PowerSellers and other expects during the first half of the show.  The last half hour are open phones where anyone can call in with a question for Griff.

Thursday afternoons from 5 to 7 pm eBay Radio presents Ask Griff and Lee, a 2 hour open phone program where you can call in and ask any questions you have about eBay.

All eBay radio programs can be streamed live to your computer from www.wsradio.com or you can listen to them via the archives from WSRadio.com or via iTunes.

During the Tuesday show there are contests for listeners.  Prizes range from eBay swag to books on the subject of eBay.

During both the Tuesday and Thursday shows regular listeners participate in the Super Secret Chat Board (SSCB).  Griff will pop in and out of the room during the show.  The chat board is a great way for listeners to network and to help one another with eBay.

eBay for Small & Medium Sized Companies PDF Print E-mail

Many people have never thought about selling unused items from small businesses on eBay when, in fact, there are lots of great opportunities to monetize old or excess inventory, used equipment and items where there is no organized secondary market. Let's start with some rules about what a business has that will sell on eBay:

1. Old or excess inventory can be a big seller if it is unique and has a reasonably value or if you have them in large lots. Many buyers look on eBay for items that are no longer made because they have a use for them or still need supplies for older machines that they use. A good way to tell whether your inventory is sellable is to look up the item on eBay and see what it is currently selling for and what kind of bids are being made for the item.

2. Many businesses use instruments that become technologically obsolete before they are functionally obsolete. Every year makers of technological equipment and instruments come out with new, improved or updated models. You buy the mdel because it is the latest and greatest and the salesmen has convinced you that there will be an adequate return-- but they don't want the old instrument or piece of equipment. The old equipment still functions well but you aren't going to need it because the new equipment comes with a strong warranty. One key to getting value out of this obsolete equipment is to get it listed on eBay as soon as you can. Often these items sit in a closet or storage room for several years before someone makes a decision to do something about them. By that time they aren't even worth anything on the aftermarket. For businesses that have equipment or instruments where replacement or technological obsolescence is a way of life, make disposing of the old equipment part of your strategy. At Isolditgulfcoast we have great success selling these items in rural areas or internationally where having the latest and greatest isn't as important as having something simple that works well!

3. We all have equipment that we own or lease under contract that is replaced when we change vendors. Two good examples of this are cell phones and copying equipment. Often when you change a wireless provider they will provide new handsets even if your old ones are less than two years old. Used cellular handsets including Blackberries and iphones sell very well on the internet. As mentioned before, however, technology is perishable! You will get more for your money if you sell this equipment within two years of the time that it was new. You also may change printer/scanner/fax machine vendors and often these vendors will want to give you new equipment regardless of the condition of your current equipment. Best to sell it quickly! The stuff takes up space!

There are a few handy rules about what is NOT sellable:

a. Anything that is sold in Walmart or a chain discount store. Even in bulk these items are rarely worth more than the shipping costs online.

b. Anything that is too big or bulky to ship. Online buyers tend to subtract the cost of shipping from what they are willing to pay for an item. Heavy, dense items or large, bulky items cost a lot of money to ship.

We have come to think of ourselves as a disposeable society; one where what we don't use gets thrown away. In fact, businesses have a lot of items that are quite valuable to others. Identifying those items and selling them in a timely fashion are the keys to success.

Beginning on September 1 our owner, Tom Finkbiner, will author a blog twice weekly. The Monday blog will contain timely, useful information that will help our consumer customers optimize their eBay selling opportunities. It will generally deal with what's hot during the current season, how to best buy and maintain items that you may wish us to list on eBay at some point after their useful life to you is over. He will also talk about items that you may not have considered selling on eBay but that sell well and what information you can provide us that will extract maximum value on the eBay aftermarket.

The Thursday blog will deal with the same type of information directed to owners and management in small and medium size businesses. For most people, selling personal items on eBay is intuitive. They understand the concept and what will likely sell. Very few small and medium sized businesses think of eBay as a place to dispose of overstocks, items that are technologically obsolete but not functionally obsolete, items or materials that are excess and/or no longer used and items for which there is not an organized secondary market. Often these things get thrown in a closet or in off-site storage because no one knows what to do with them. Employees know that the items still work or that they are not junk but don't know what to do with them. Often several years later the item is thrown out as commercially obsolete when it had residual eBay value at the time it was stored.

Consumers may find value in reviewing the commercial blogs and buriness people will, no doubt, find it useful to review the consumer blogs. Look for these blogs beginning Thursday, September 3. Feel free to contact us for more information or to comment on them by responding through our website!
