General Motors began an experiment in July that had dealers posting new cars for sale on eBay. The project ends today, and although cars didn’t fly off the lot as a result, the move peaked plenty of interest. GM and eBay said the program, which was limited to California, was useful in helping determine whether auctions would work on a nationwide basis. The online auctions were credited with generating 1.5 million page views and 15,000 sales leads for dealers. According to GM, about 95% of its California dealers participated in the program, which required little of them other than that they upload inventory information and guarantee availability of the vehicles listed for auction. Although the auctions will cease after today, GM said it was not closing the door on the online auction format for good. Its dealers will continue to sell certified pre-owned cars on EBay, as do dealers for Ford, Audi, Lexus, Toyota and Mercedes. In addition, GM’s spokesman John McDonald said the automaker would consider posting new cars for sale online again in the future, perhaps as early as next year. |

Haven’t received your Google Wave invite yet? You’re not alone. Thousands of users around the world are still awaiting their invitation to Google’s new communication platform.
At this point, it’s not clear whether demand far exceeds supply or Google (Google) is simply still waiting to open the flood gates, but if you really can’t wait, at least one invite has already found its way to eBay.
The item has already attracted 19 bids, pushing the price up to $70 (there are two days left on the auction). Mind you, for the moment it’s the only Wave invite auction on eBay, a far cry from the mini-industry that emerged around Gmail (Gmail) invites back in 2004. Nonetheless, the fact that a free web service can still attract any significant interest in an auction does show the enormous level of hype that’s been built up for Wave.
Whether or not users will continue to be allowed to sell invites is unclear though, as Google Wave’s (Google Wave) terms say that users are prohibited from “Sell, trade, resell or otherwise exploit the Service for any unauthorized commercial purpose,” though a number of Google Voice (Google Voice) invites can also be found on the auction service. eBay is known for bargains, but few reach the magnitude of savings enjoyed by Colette Palin and Lee Clark. Thanks to a winning bid on eBay, the British couple was married in style at a beautiful English country hotel, all for $81, a savings of more than $2,000.
After receiving a last-minute wedding cancellation, the hotel decided to put the wedding package up for auction. Included were a three-course meal for 35, an evening buffet for 50, a champagne reception, table decorations, a toastmaster, and a room for the bride and groom.
Rooms in the three-star hotel cost around 50 pounds, or $80 a night, while it's fully inclusive wedding package normally starts at £29.50 per person, or $47. For 50 people, this would normally have totaled $2,350, rather than the $81 the Clarks paid. The average British wedding costs around £15,000.
The bride also bagged her gown at half price, and her grandmother provided the wedding cake.
Now, that's a bargain. |

The Black Eyed Peas are giving one lucky fan a chance to fly to Australia with them. The chart-topping hip-hop group is auctioning exclusive packages on eBay, allowing the winner to be part of their attempt at two world records.
The eBay auction will launch on Saturday, September 26 and conclude on October 3. Fans can bid on a chance to board a Virgin Blue private jet with the "The E.N.D." hitmakers for Mile High Karaoke.
The highest bidder and a friend will fly on V Australia from Los Angeles to Australia on October 6, where they will be flown to Melbourne on the 8th. They will spend the day there and then board a Virgin Blue private jet back to Perth with the Peas on October 9.
The lucky winner will be part of the Peas' attempt at obtaining two world records: highest altitude live performance and recorded track.
After the exclusive in-flight performance and the mile high karaoke session with the group, the winner and a guest will holiday for 2 nights at the Mercure Perth and attend the Peas' "The E.N.D. World Tour" at Burswood Dome on October 10. Prior to the adventures, the winner will also attend an exclusive meet-and-greet with the group.
All the proceeds from the auction will go to The University of Western Australia in America, which aims to improve and promote the health and well-being of all children through the unique application of multidisciplinary research. Source |
